With rock music being so popular in the last few decades many people really want to learn both the Acoustic Guitar and electric guitar. The problem is many of people don’t find the best way to suit their learning style and after a few attempts they finally give up.

Different people have different learning needs and if you’re not at the level you want, maybe it’s because you haven’t found the best way for you. There are several ways to learn how to play the guitar and students often combine them. Here are examples of the primary methods.

Guitar Theory Books

There are thousands of theory books on the market that teach you how to play the guitar. Some of them are even very good and can provide you with all the information you need. Books are an inexpensive and comfortable strategy to learn how to play the guitar. Unfortunately, experience shows that for many of us, they just don’t work as its hard to keep motivated. However, if you are a very patient and driven person, a theory book might be the best way to learn guitar.

Video guitar lessons are available on DVDs in almost any music store, as well as in virtual shops. You can also find video lessons available online and even free ones as well. Video lessons are more dynamic and have a better chance of keeping you focused than just using a theory book. They also have the advantage of allowing you to practice at home whenever you find the time to do it. However, the inconvenience is that you can’t benefit from the personalized attention and useful feedback a teacher could provide.

Private Guitar Lessons

If you are willing to dedicate a lot of time as well as some money then private lessons are definitely the best way to learn guitar. A good teacher can design a customized teaching program to suit your learning style and provide you with individualized attention and positive feedback to get you motivated. In addition, he/she can also spot and correct your mistakes very fast.

Learning Guitar by Ear

This can be lots of fun, especially if you have some musical talent in you waiting to get out. Examples of learning by ear are jamming with friends or alone, playing along with your favorite music, using software that slows songs down for learning and so on.

A positive of this method is the chance to really develop a style of your own without being overly influenced by a teacher’s style. A negative point is developing bad habits that may be hard to fix up the longer you do them. My advice is to get a few lessons early on for a solid footing and then get creative jamming with others. Do some more lessons later on.

Summary

Whichever method or combination you use, don’t forget that if you aren’t having a good time playing your guitar then maybe you should reconsider how you are learning it. Before giving up, try a different way and talk to other guitarists about it. Focus on what made you want to start learning anyway and keep that focus.
