What are some different acoustic guitar body styles?
I don’t know that much about acoustic guitar because I’m more of an electric guitar player. I’ve heard of the dreadnought and the big baby, but don’t know what they are. Can you explain to me what they are and how they differ in sound? I heard that there’s one that’s a singer/songwriter guitar, but don’t know which one. I’m asking because the acoustic guitar is starting to grow on me and I’m getting a new one soon.
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to body sizes and names are thrown around all the time. Some of the more common names derive from CF Martin company’s original designations. These include dreadnought, 000, 000, 0, OM, jumbo, and a few others. Other companies use terms like auditorium, grand concert, parlor, small jumbo, and even grand auditorium. But you can never be sure of the exact size unless you go to the maker’s web site and see what their dimensions are.
While dreadnought is the most popular size, it tends to be bass-heavy. Singer-songwriters typically like smaller guitars like 000 or OM or auditorium size. These guitars have a more balanced tonal range that goes well as an accompaniment. You need to try a bunch of them and hear for yourself.
